Objective: Although a considerable amount of research has revealed connections between weight stigma and mental and physical health outcomes, no studies to date have experimentally manipulated the experience of obesity to understand how weight stigma causally affects eating behavior, physiology, and psychological well-being. Research has also not yet identified effective strategies for reducing weight stigma. Methods: In this research, the effect of weight stigma on psychological outcomes, unhealthy eating behavior, and the stress hormone cortisol was examined by randomly assigning participants to appear obese by wearing a fat suit or not.
It was hypothesized that the physical alteration of participants’ apparent body size would lead to similar consequences as those associated with the experience of weight stigma and reduce antifat attitudes. Results: Supporting these hypotheses, experimentally manipulating apparent body size led participants to consume more unhealthy foods and report higher levels of negative effect.
However, the study did not show any differences in cortisol reactivity or reduction in antifat attitudes as a function of the fat suit manipulation. Conclusions: These findings contribute to an understanding of the potentially deleterious psychological and behavioral effects of weight stigma while also informing future interventions to reduce weight stigma. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials. Abstract Objective: Although a considerable amount of research has revealed connections between weight stigma and mental and physical health outcomes, no studies to date have experimentally manipulated the experience of obesity to understand how weight stigma causally affects eating behavior, physiology, and psychological well-being.

Over approximately the last 30 years, as prosthetic technology has become more sophisticated, Hollywood has embraced the use of fat suits. Typically, fat suits are worn by thin actresses as part of a before-and-after scenario in which sudden, dramatic weight loss signifies their success.
We saw this with Goldie Hawn in Death Becomes Her , where her character Helen was a frumpy writer who uses futuristic science to become a glamorous novelist. Fat activist and You Have the Right to Remain Fat author Virgie Tovar says that fat suits allow audiences to relate to plus-size characters without the horror of having to emphasize with a real-life fat person. Pop culture often uses fat suits to communicate that weight gain should be a source of shame.
As a result, George becomes depressed, and her popularity plummets. Insatiable similarly compounds the idea that thinness is a necessary condition for self-respect and the respect of others. Fat Monica continues to be a polarizing figure, not just in pop culture history but also in the show that created it. Discussing the legacy of Friends can lead to a lot of disagreement. Some praise it as one of the funniest sitcoms of all time. Some dismiss it as a Living Single rip-off. Some prefer to view the show with rose-colored, nostalgic-tinged glasses. Some point out characters like womanizer Joey Matt LeBlanc have certainly not aged well. Countless think pieces have explained why the character was problematic.
Fat Monica is often seen eating sloppily, wiping chocolate from her face, or licking powdered sugar from her fingers. Could the show have treated her better? And Fat Monica allowed people to take those anxieties about fatness, project them onto the character, and laugh at them. On one hand, Fat Monica appears to be unbothered and unconcerned with people staring at her while she dances, which itself would be great, but her dancing is played for laughs and is usually done with some type of food in hand — famously a donut.

This, Paltrow says now, was not clear to her until she had to live like a fat woman. It was so sad. It was so disturbing. No one would make eye contact with me because I was obese. I felt humiliated.
Fat characters rarely show up on TV and film, and when they do, they are hardly ever presented as people who deserve to be treated with dignity or respect. Despite public outcry over shows such as Insatiable — in which a formerly overweight teenager seeks revenge on the bullies who fat-shamed her while simultaneously being turned into a beauty pageant queen — and despite huge milestones being made with social media body-positivity trends, mainstream entertainment is yet to do much better.
As Paltrow has realised, even seemingly good-natured fat jokes are no shallow or insignificant thing. They hurt people, and then as now, need deeper reflection from those who choose to tell them.
